6 weeks raw and......
A quick entry about our raw diet. Some may frown on my last entry about 90%. But, 6 weeks into our 90% raw diet and we get TONS of compliments from our friends, neighbors, my boss and people we don't know by name how "good" we look. I am very proud or our new diet, apparently it's noticeable. Again, it's not a diet to us, it's a lifestyle. Of course, I do share it with anyone who has time to listen.
With kids on the weekends it is challenging. Damon's 10 year old boy Nathan will do MOST raw items that we eat. But Ali, a 12 year old girl (13 in Sept.) will not even try most of it. We had them write a menu out for us to help us know what to provide to them on weekends for meals. Needless to say we were disappointed. We would have loved to see more Fruit and Vegetables on the list. But like most "American diet" children, all the meals were based around meat, pasta or bread. I can't say it's their fault. We did the same thing. We will not push our new lifestyle on them, but when we do COOK for them it is always organic. That we do insist on.

I first would like to thank you, Toni, for sending me the link to this site. I am proud of the dedication that you and Damon display in going "raw", and hope to see many others at least try to include more raw foods in their diets. I also would like readers to know that I am Damons' mother, a vegetarian, who is pleased to see he adhered to most of his childhood diet and is improving upon it as an adult. Having a devoted partner to share in research and promote their healthier lifestyle is a bonus! I know personally that introducing veggies at an early age is key to likely seeing your offspring devour such things as spinach and broccoli without the all-too-common "YUK" factor many American children display. (Planting the garden with ones' children is another method of introducing healthier eating habits; just another motherly hint!) I was very pleased to hear that Grandson Nathan takes after Dad with more than physical appearance; Damons' step-brothers HATED almost all "healthy" items, and it was also not their fault. I am happy to notice these days school lunches offer alternatives unheard of just a few years ago, and even some fast food places are introducing new options. I hope I live to see the day when a sack lunch of baby carrots and raw almonds does NOT envoke laughter and teasing in the groups of students but instead a "healthy interest" (and maybe some friendly taste-tests!) With todays' hectic lifestyles, working and rushing about, a pocketful of raw ORGANIC sunflower seeds and/or dried fruits can help get a person through those moments of potential diet "disasters"; but I know too well it's difficult to convert others or break old habits. I spent many years cooking for my "meat & potatoes" guys; but being a widow today means my solitary life affords more freedom of choice to do better for my health (and I rarely use my stove!) It's summertime and if you can't garden, farmers' markets are popping up in more towns - as well as community gardens; think organic as you peruse the produce section of supermarkets. In closing, I want to add that the comment of Damon & Toni looking good is something worth noting; I am 57 years young and haven't a single wrinkle on my face! Genetics? Just luck? Why not try a change in your eating habits, even if it's just for THIS summer...and if you happen to notice a difference in the way you feel (or see results in the mirror or scale) you just might be on the way to a healthier, happier self!
