Local Farmers Market
Today was Friday. That means Farmer's Market in Garberville. We always look forward to it in order to fill our kitchen with the things we cannot produce enough of in our garden, or stocking up for the week. Once you consider the life force in your food, you start thinking about how far it has to travel to get to your kitchen. When you go to your local farmers market you have a chance to talk to the farmers who are growing the foods that you are putting into your body. Do you talk to your grocer about the fresh produce you buy? When I grew up there was the "green grocer" on TV that you could watch to get information on fruits and veggies.... when you went to the store, he was there! Anybody still have one? We should still ask questions, we should find out when it's ripe, where it came from and how to eat it. If it doesn't come from your own garden, where did it come from?

This is what we bought to help us get through the week. Local grapes, (the kids love to freeze them) chilis, which we plan to make some raw rellenos, green bell pepper (ours are just starting to produce) we use onions on everything now, the melon was beautiful and the zucchini came from our yard. (We wouldn't dare purchase any this time of year!, it just looked good in the photo
) We also purchased 1 lb of garlic. We spent a total of $12.00. $5.00 on the pound of garlic alone, which we are thankful for. My favorite way to eat garlic is on popcorn in the evenings. We press it right on the popcorn with nutritional yeast, himalayan salt and some Spike seasoning. I'm hooked. I'm very in tune to my body about how it reacts to foods. The other day we went to a local organic restaurant for lunch. I ordered a salad with their "house" creamy garlic dressing. I was gassy and bloated for the rest of the day, and had horrific garlic breath! I realized when I eat our fresh garlic almost every night I do not get any of those symptoms. Why? I do believe because we use everything fresh, and local. The next time I go to the restaurant I will ask what kind of garlic they use, Fresh or from a Jar?.. (stay tuned for more juicy details on garlic)
I would like to challenge all of you to go to your local farmer's market (if you have one) and purchase the seasonal vegetables that are available. Feed them to your kids! Cook them if you need to, but know what they taste like raw.
