NEWS FLASH: The FDA will soon decide what level of BPA is safe for human consumption

Nearly EVERY canned food or drink in the US is lined with a plastic substance containing Bisphenol-A or BPA. Tests were presented in 1982 as to whether this chemical would be used in food-grade plastics and epoxies and be GRAS or "generally recognized as safe" within the food and cosmetic industry. Mass production for food and medical grade plastics begins without FDA testing....we're now at 7 BILLION pounds per year yet the tests were never reviewed by the EPA. It remains up to us to choose safe products.

In 1998 the EPA ordered thousands of chemicals including BPA to be tested for human safety as endocrine disruptors were suspected of causing wildlife disease and were found in water supplies. 1999, they miss the deadline for testing...by 2007 the EPA had yet to screen its first chemical. This was after being sued by many agencies and organizations including 4 states! Up until now, BPA was not even scheduled to be tested until after 2010...this is so disturbing after simply going to google and entering "bisphenol-a". The results directly correlate BPA to many diseases from thyroid function, neurological and reproductive disorders and especially breast cancer as it mimics estrogen within the body. Canada banned BPA October, 2008. The FDA considers testing the safety of BPA in humans November 4th, 2009.

BPA is found in over 93% of humans today and is used in the manufacture of 95% of baby bottles. Again as of today, the FDA has yet to review any test results of BPA regarding it's safety in humans. Please read this update from Consumer Reports Magazine as reviewed at examiner.com which begins: "The FDA will soon decide what level of BPA is safe for human consumption", just sad. I don't know about you but I would honestly love to be able to make the choice of consuming none! It gets even worse when you consider not one of those 7 billion pounds of BPA ever breaks down into natural components. Every pound is either in a landfill or in the ocean as detailed in the video below.

This is a great video though the reporter does use some "extra spicy" language as he discovers what is really floating out in the ocean where nobody really has to care about it. Out of sight out of mind eh? Not me....I watched this a year ago and my garbage can has changed for the better ever since then.

Yes I felt that way too, we now use waxed paper bags for nearly everything we can. Glass storage containers replaced all the plastic and we even line our garbage can with old newspapers instead of buying plastic bags. What are you doing to reduce your plastic footprint?
