Battle of the Bitter Grapefruit smoothie

Smoothies are our morning staple. They help us get our fruit intake and are an incredible way to start the day. Now that summer is gone the fresh local fruit we have to choose from is diminishing. But we are up to the challenge! I keep whatever is available from the local organic market in the pantry and we deal. Here's what Damon did with the bitter grapefruit.

Battle of the Bitter Grapefruit Smoothie recipe by Damon Siska

½ cup Brazil nuts, soaked overnight

3 cups water

1 inch fresh vanilla bean (or 1/2 teaspoon liquid vanilla)

5 dates, soaked to soften (approx 10 mins in warm water)

Pinch of salt

Blend Brazil nuts and water in high speed blender. Run through nut milk bag to remove pulp. Return to blender, add vanilla, dates, and salt blend until smooth.

¼ cup raisins, soaked to soften (approx 10 mins in warm water)

1 ruby grapefruit, peeled

¼ cup raspberries, frozen

1 banana, peeled

1 green apple, cored

1 tablespoon mesquite powder

1tablespoon flax oil

1 tray of ice cubes

Add above ingredients to milk and blend until smooth.

The recipe filled up the Vita Mix. That allowed us to each have a 16 oz glass for breakfast and a 16 oz jar for later in the day.

The glass straws are our favorite. Find them at GlassDharma. I use them for my smoothies so I can avoid the mustache that occurs when drinking from a jar . The green smoothies are the biggest culprit.

I recently had a green smoothie at work. After enjoying my smoothie from the jar, a customer came in. After helping my customer I finally had time to go the the powder room. Much to my dismay I had a green mustache. Hmmmm, you think the guy noticed?  My advice: Drink your green smoothies from a straw! And, choose glass so you won't be sucking any unwanted plastic chemicals .
