Papaya Celery Smoothie

I never thought I'd say this, but I DO love smoothies. The word "smoothie" comes with a lot of pre-concieved notions doesn't it? A "smoothie" should be rich, creamy and full of dairy? No, a smoothie is what you make it. Rich, creamy and full of great flavor.
Our journey into raw living foods has been wonderful for me. I never was the greatest cook, although I don't claim to be presently either, but raw food has ended the confusion for me in the kitchen. I have said before that I grew up on boxed food. I never learned to cook fresh living fruits and vegetables. My mother did cook meat, and lots of it. Fruits and vegetables came from cans and frozen packages. I could follow recipes, but it seemed like every one took special ingredients and 3 trips to the store..... Since going "raw" I seem to have lost the confusion. No more am I wondering how long to simmer something or what spice to put in when so it doesn't lose it's flavor, etc., etc.
When mixing raw foods everything tastes like it will in the end, so mixing flavors is much easier than cooked food.
I am getting good at smoothies and mixing whatever we have into a wonderful breakfast meal.
Have we discussed food combining yet? If you are trying to incorporate more raw foods into your diet, keep in mind that fruits digest faster than veggies. The one exception is greens. You can mix fruits and any green vegetable and still be safe. Any other vegetable should be eaten with other vegetables or alone at least 2 hours after any fruit. It works! Trust me.
Coming from a person that has a very slow metabolism, I always had issues. I also never ate much fruit. Once again I was raised on canned fruit. I thought that fruit was canned fruit cocktail with the little red cherries that my sisters and I used to fight over. Very rarely did we ever have fresh oranges,  peaches, nectarines or pears in our pantry (or any fruit for that matter). Rice was always from a box, (rice-a-roni) and mashed potatoes were usually instant!

Here is a smoothie that I created recently. It's really easy once you keep fresh fruit in your pantry. It's not expensive either. I hear that alot. "Raw is expensive". No it's not! One pound of Almonds cost $8.99 at our local organic market. One pound of almonds can make up to 6 or 7 meals or smoothies. How much does one pound of meat cost for one meal? Do the math. We are spending less money per meal now that we are raw than we ever did being vegetarians! Bread and soy were getting expensive. Fruits and vegetables are very affordable.

Here's my smoothie:

Thanks for a great recipe! A trick I learned is to freeze my veggies and fruits instead of adding ice. You should try it

Thank you for the wonderful suggestion. That would keep it from getting too thin that's for sure.

Isn't it amazing when you think about what you grew up eating vs. the way you eat now? I was the same way. Lot's of cooked meat and pasta, veggies were usually corn or potatoes and most fruit came in a can or was apple sauce!

I wonder sometimes how I managed to grow into a healthy adult eating that way as a kid!
